I recently read Text book of Pediatrics -1st Edition by Prof.Piyush Gupta. Its targetted to primerily the undergraduate (final MBBS) students however I feel its a very good reference muterial for even postgraduates in pediatrics, medical officers and pediatrics nurse practitioners.
Prof.Piyush Gupta is a well known academician and a senior editor in chief of prestigious journal 'Indian Pediatrics'. His expertise as an editor is much evident in the book. The book has been contributed by 30 academicians across india but the uniform style and lucid presentation has been well maintained through out the book. The book covers the most essential topics of pediatrics in 20 different sections. General Pediatrics, Emergencies,Neonatal Care, Immunization & Govt. Programme like IMNCI are really well crafted. The illustrations,photographs and flow diagrammes in the book gives reader an easy understanding opportunity about the topic. Most chapters present the recent updated information available eg. reuscitation chapter describes NRP 2010 etc., which gives reader an edge over others.
The most unique aspect of the book are the case studies given in many chapters. This undoubtedly uplifts the clinical knowledge of the reader, especially amongst the undergraduates where there is very little or no clinical background. Standard recommendations of different bodies like UNICEF,NNF,IAP are well blended with easy descriptive write ups makes the book a reliable reference material.
The book is well page-setted and printed in two colour tones with good standard paper material & hard bound. The blue jacket gives it an 'old classic' look which could have been designed more modern and a bit humanised with photographs. The colour picture suppliments of few images might have given the book added 'pudding on the cake'.
Overall the book is worth recommending for all the undergraduates & postgraduates learning Pediatrics.
